Biography

Iwi/Hapū: Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu, Te Tahawai
Name Variations : Rewharewha Te Koke, Rewharewha.

Born around 1780 at Te Pupuke, Ururoa was a prominent rangatira of Whangaroa. A relation, as well as a brother-in-law to Hongi Hika and sometimes described as Hongi’s right-hand man. Ururoa was the son of Te Koke and Nehe, and brother of Te Hau.[1] Key relationships are shown in the table below.[2]

Ururoa lived at Matangirau (near Kaeo) when he was younger, but moved inland when he was old enough to join the fighting expeditions.

On 28 October 1835 at the Waitangi residence of James Busby, Ururoa was one of 34 chiefs who signed He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene (known in English as the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand).

According to a Turton Deed, Ururoa (recorded as Uderoa) and Putete, Chiefs of Whangaroa, Mangonui District sold the Huruata and Rangimatua Block on 8 November 1837. The buyers were Charles Smith and Edward T. B. Boyce. James Whittaker was one of two witnesses to the transaction. [3]
Ururoa lived well into his eighties and died in 1861 at Te Pupuke.[4]

Unknown was born about 1750. He passed away about 1800. [5]

Henry had been married to Sophia Jaques in about 1833 in Australia and had 5 children, in Prospect, Parramatta Australia and Whangaroa NZ. Their 4th child, Mary Ann Snowden married John Semple in 1860, a son of theirs, Theodore Francis Semple was born in 1861 in Matakana, Wellsford and married Mary Margaret Stirling of Carlton, Victoria in Melbourne. Theodore was an engineer in Perth West Australia, great grandson of the Chief of Whangaroa and buried in the Fremantle Cemetery, Perth in 1905 (his wife Mary died in 1904 in Coburg, Victoria now a suburb of Melbourne)
